Fabric of the Opera: The Winspear World Premieres

The Dallas Opera has teamed up with NorthPark Center to create a special, historic exhibit for mall visitors and art patrons alike. This year the show is “The Fabric of Opera: The Winspear World Premieres,” and it showcases costumes that were specifically designed and created for operas that premiered through The Dallas Opera during its first decade at the Winspear Opera House (2009-2019). This exhibit is as much a celebration of incredible costumes and craftsmanship as it is the momentous 10-year anniversary.
On display are costumes and props from four operas that have premiered at Winspear Opera House: Everest (2015), Moby-Dick (2010), Great Scott (2015), and Becoming Santa Claus (2015). Renowned costumes designers, including Jane Greenwood and Gary McCann, are among the celebrated craftsmen. From ghosts of mountaineers who climbed Mount Everest to women in elaborate, bejeweled gowns and hats beholding a three-tiered cake, the characters and costumes are sure to wow. Each of the four collections contains colors, patterns, and textures that cause you to circle them again and again. You can almost envision the scene unfolding before you! Commentary from the composers and librettists of the operas accompany each of the costume collections and provide insight into the nuances of the design process.
This remarkable exhibit demonstrates the artistry and incredible hard work that goes into just one aspect of The Dallas Opera productions. You have until November 6 to check it out. Trust me – you don’t want to miss it!
